REVIEW: Queensrÿche - Queensrÿche (EP) 206 Records, 1983
9/10
Queensrÿche - Queensrÿche (EP) - cover art This is the legendary first effort from the equally legendary band Queensryche. This EP was first released on the band´s own label 206 Records and led to them signing a seven record deal with the huge record company EMI. Geoff Tate could not be given any less credit than being the main (but definitely not only!) reason for the band´s success because those vocals could sure break bricks. Unfortunately his vocals has become worse and worse over the years, losing the opera touch that he once had from being classically trained. The songs on this EP don´t have the same complexity as the ones on their future albums but this is without a doubt one of the best demos ever to be made by a metal or hard rock band. They have the ability to create beautiful guitar solos without sounding like another boring Yngwie Malmsteen. If you like hard rock and old classic metal there is no chance you wouldn´t love Queensryche and this EP is proof of what once made them so special and different from other bands. The two best songs on this EP - "Nightrider" and "Prophecy" - are well in the same division as those on their classic Operation Mindcrime album from 1988 and the other three don´t fall far behind. I have been thinking a lot about giving this a full 5 out of 5 but that doesn´t seem right to the band since they must be given the chance to improve with their later releases... All the way back in 1983 there was music produced that is great even compared to the best bands of today.
