REVIEW: Queensrÿche - The Warning EMI Records, 1984
9.5/10
Queensrÿche - The Warning - cover art After having issued their self-titled EP in 1983, the Seattle based band Queensrÿche signed a major label deal with EMI Records for the release of their debut album "The Warning". For most people who were into hard rock and heavy metal back in the early 80s this was the first encounter with the band that would become legendary with the release of the concept album "Operation: Mindcrime" four years later. The song writing on "The Warning" is not quite as elaborate and complete but it shows a high degree of maturity and the music in general is slightly slower, more epic and laidback than the five tracks on their EP. I do not wish to reduce the importance of the instrumentalists in the band but a review of a Queensrÿche album can not be complete without mentioning the outstanding vocalist Geoff Tate. He is one of the few hard rock and metal vocalists whose voice is capable of sending shivers down the spine. I am not as impressed with his performance on the latter releases but in the 80s he was simply amazing. He has an extremely wide range and is able to hit notes that you did not know existed. I am very interested in hearing material from his two other early bands Myth and Babylon so if you have any demos of these bands please let me know. Queensrÿche were one of the lucky bands to find a working formula and "The Warning" definitely deserves a place next to "Operation: Mindcrime" as one of the finer metal releases of the 80s. Classics such as "No Sanctuary", "Warning" and "Before The Storm" will never be forgotten. Queensrÿche were one of a kind.
