The Greensboro quintet Quell is here with the chaotic, hyperactive metalcore record ‘One Man's Struggle with the English Language’. Opening track ‘the start of an unfinished chain reaction’ hits you like a bat in the head with its fury. It has, just like the following track ‘final transaction and end balance’, a dark groove that sucks you in under the surface of disorder. At some parts they slow things down, like in the really good track ‘circumventing language barriers by speaking louder’ that swings back and forth from loud chaos to quiet and peaceful. The nameless ninth track is an instrumental song with a flowing piano that is revealed as the noise is slowly stripped away. But it is noise and chaos that dominates ‘One Man's Struggle with the English Language’ and sometimes I think Quell gets lost in their own technical skills. The focus seems to be on playing as fast as possible with a lot of dissonance and constantly changing tempo. This is certainly not an easy-listening record, but those that like ‘The Dillinger Escape plan’ should give it a try.
