UK band Raging Speedhorn explodes back onto the scene with their 3rd album, How The Great Have Fallen. Here we find the band continuing in its fine tradition by delivering their lethal combination of hardcore and metal. The music unleashed by these Brits can mostly be described as angry, pissed off, and in your face. While these are certainly not uncommon themes with many young bands out there today, it is the particular ability of these guys to truly fire up the listener that may separate them a bit from the crowd. Perhaps it is the splash of punk rock attitude or maybe the band’s ability to craft tasty hard-hitting riffs, but most likely it is the combination of both of these, which upon hearing, make me want to locate the nearest mosh pit and engage myself in combat.
The opening track “A Different Shade of Shit” hits you hard like a punch in the face. Being one of the faster tracks on the disc, it’s a great opener, as it immediately grabs your attention. The band uses two different vocalists and most of the energetic singing is of the hard-core variety, with the occasional guttural growl. The band also shows the ability to create some catchy groove within their songs, while maintaining a high level of intensity throughout. The fact that these guys are able to keep up this intensity signifies to me that they ARE really pissed off about something. While you may not find blazing solos or grand technical prowess on this disc, the undeniable spirit of this band lies in their high emotion and their overall message. Songs like the euphoric “Dead Man Walking”, “Master of Disaster” with its hostile chorus, or the driving finale “Don’t Let the Bastards Grind You Down” should be satisfying to anyone looking to let out their aggressions. These songs are all about showing no mercy, crushing your enemy, overthrowing any and all oppressors, and having a little fun while you’re at it too.
As this is the band’s first album to be released in the US, I hope that a tour will follow because I have read and heard that this is one of those bands that truly should be experienced in the live setting. It is known that several great live acts have had problems capturing their sound in the studio, but the production on this disc courtesy of Queens of The Stone Age associate Joe Baresi, seems to be quite efficient. The vocals come across as effectively lucid, and I especially like some cool echoing effects going on with the guitars. I just want to add that if you do happen to get this disc, be sure to listen all the way through, as there is a hilarious little skit right before the CD shuts off, which will have you rolling in laughter. All in all this solid release from Raging Speedhorn should continue their momentum and establish themselves some new fans in the US.
