REVIEW: Ragnarok - Blackdoor Miracle Regain Records, 2004
7.5/10
Ragnarok - Blackdoor Miracle - cover art Norwegian Ragnarok celebrate their 10th year in existence with the release of their fifth full-length album "Blackdoor Miracle", a title being as meaningful as the lyrics of Dimmu Borgir. That aside these black metal veterans have unleashed yet another memorable release. This is the first album featuring the new vocalist U. Høst who fans of Norwegian black metal probably know already from his main band Taake. He is a nice addition to the band and definitely have what it takes to push Ragnarok forward in their career. There is a little bit of a Hypocrisy touch to this album but that is mostly in the overall sound thanks to the recording sessions having taken place at the Abyss Studio in Sweden with Tommy Tägtgren in charge. I think I personally would have preferred if they would have recorded the album elsewhere as the Abyss sound doesn't really suit their music. That aside "Blackdoor Miracle" also show resemblances to Satyricon's "Nemesis Divina" era with a little Marduk and some more modern influences added to the final mix. Ragnarok is definitely one of the stronger bands on the rawer side of black metal at the moment and "Blackdoor Miracle" will not disappoint fans of the genre unless you are fanatically anti-evolution because there is a slight change of direction here, incorporating some minor death metal riffs here and there. Intense, raw and aggressive black metal done the way it should be. Nothing unique but very well done.
