REVIEW: Rain Paint - Nihil Nisi Mors My Kingdom Music, 2003
4/10
Rain Paint - Nihil Nisi Mors - cover art "Nihil Nisi Mors" is the debut album by the Finnish band Rain Paint, released by the Italian label My Kingdom Music about half a year ago. To put it short, the music on this CD could be described as quite complex gothic metal - sometimes too soft and melodic (have a listen to the H.I.M.-ish "Loose and Over"), with some death metal roars included every now and then (like in the self-titled cut "Rain Paint", "Freezes Day", and the 8-minute-long epic "Miss Spring"), or sleazy heavy metal curves ("Raven Nevermore", "Sleeping Beauty" and, unfortunately, in most of the tracks...). Just imagine Sentenced facing Virgin Black, for example... As for the lyrics, they deal with "longing and regret", according to band's ideologist Aleksi Ahokas (vocals, bass and guitar; also in Fragile Hollow; ex-Prophet). The other two steady line-up members are Sami Koikkalainen of Fragile Hollow (guitar) and Denigrate's Tim Toivanen (drums). Besides, there's about half a dozen session musicians taking part in the creation of "Nihil Nisi Mors", namely vocalists Henri Villberg (Rapture) and Micko Hell (Denigrate), keyboard player Tea Dickman (Fragile Hollow), and drummer Make Vainio (Fragile Hollow). However, despite this all-star gathering, Rain Paint have a lot more to learn, especially in terms of developing an own sound with original ideas... otherwise they'll remain nothing but a short-lived side-project.
