When Ritchie Blackmore left Deep Purple in 1975 he was not to
leave the world of music at all. Instead he formed his own solo project and
released the legendary "Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow" that very year. He did
of course return to Deep Purple later on before settling down with his new
medieval / renaissance project Blackmore's Night which is in my opinion the
most interesting work he has been involved with in his long and prosperous
career. Back to Rainbow then. This is the second album from the band and even
though it is always hard to follow up a debut album when you are one of the
leading bands in the world they managed to do so with a tremendous result.
"Rising" is one of the musical highlights of the 70's and includes almost
solely classic songs such as "Tarot Woman", "Starstruck" and
"Stargazer". They may seem to be a little obsessed with stars but then
again, that is what they were. The only song on this album that isn't
absolutely outstanding is "Do You Close Your Eyes" which almost turns a
little cheesy. Luckily it ends after less than 3 minutes and is the shortest
track of the album. Blackmore couldn't possibly have found a much better set
of musicians to work with for this album. Himself on guitars, Dio on vocals,
Cozy Powell on drums, Jimmy Bain on bass and Tony Carey on keyboards. The
line-up isn't everything of course but he also managed to write some of the
best music that this world has ever had the pleasure of enjoying with this
album. 70's organs, classic hard rock / heavy metal, powerful vocals and
excellent song writing puts "Rising" in a very important spot in the history
of heavy music.
