REVIEW: Raise Hell - City Of The Damned Black Lodge, 2006
7.5/10
Raise Hell - City Of The Damned - cover art The Swedish thrash metal act Raise Hell ended their three album contract with the metal giant Nuclear Blast on a high note with the highly underrated "Wicked Is My Game" album in 2002. Four years later they have signed a new contract with the Swedish Black Lodge label and reinforced the band with the recruitment of a new vocalist called Jimmy Fjällendahl. "City Of The Damned" lacks some of the intense Bay Area riffing that made the predecessor what it was - a fine piece of art - but songs like the title track and the strong hit candidate "Open Your Mind" still make it a memorable album well worth buying for old fans of the band. A few new fans will probably also be attracted by the increasingly melodic direction that Raise Hell are heading in and I dare guess that the band members fancy classic 80s heavy metal such as Accept. Even though this is a solid album with an equally solid production there are not as many highs as there were on "Wicked Is My Game" but on the other hand there are very few lows as well. A nice listening experience if melodic thrash metal is your cup of tea. Stand-out tracks: "City Of The Damned", "Open Your Mind", "Rising".
