REVIEW: Rakoth - Planeshift Code666, 1999
9/10
Rakoth - Planeshift - cover art Wow is a word I dont use very often! This is a great release from a band that many of you may not even have heard of yet. Rakoth is a three-piece constellation from Obninsk, one of many smaller cities outside Moscow in Russia. The band has been around since 1996 and has recorded two demos and one LP before this release and was then finally signed to the small Italian label Code666 in 1999. The music is a unique mix of folk music, black metal and classical arrangements with a dark touch, very emotional yet metally in its nature. There are both screechy black vocals and hypnotizing clean ones as well as enchanting spoken interludes. Important ingrediences in the Rakoth style are the flutes and keyboards who together with the guitars create an atmosphere that has not been seen before on the metal scene. I know, you think of Rhapsody, Therion, Skyclad etc. but Rakoth is totally unique and I have never heard anything like this before. They can not be placed in a specific genre since their music crosses over so many different fields. You will just have to listen to them yourself and discover a whole new world together with one of the most innovative bands of today. You will not be disappointed, I promise you! This is music for open minds and I'm quite sure that even non-metal fans could enjoy several songs on "Planeshift". One of the best debut releases I've ever heard. The album was recorded at CDM Studio in Moscow during October 1999, engineered by Sergei Lazar and produced by Code666.
