REVIEW: Rammstein - Reise, Reise Universal Music, 2004
4/10
Rammstein - Reise, Reise - cover art Unfortunately, Rammstein has peaked in their decline as a musical act. I'm not sure how much further this German metal act can wash themselves out. I'm not gonna jump on the bandwagon and start yelling about the band selling out or about their apparent decision to stray from their original metal sound. Rather I'm going to say flat out that the band has lost their edge. The music feels both lethargic and poorly conceived while never getting the listener really involved in the music.

The main problem seems that they've taken a turn towards the movie soundtrack sound. The melodramatic, catchy tuned, mainstream development that has been capturing bands from all sorts of genres. Hell even Nightwish is caught up in it right now. Alas, Rammstein's once dark sound has altered to a more cheery sound minus one or two tracks on the album that have the potential to really rock. "Mein Teil" for example feels like it could really be something if the verse could have contained more than a mechanical fuzz and the distorted vocals that remind me of some sort of demented garden gnome.

I'm not one of those death metallers that trashes Rammstein because of their innate simplicity or their some-what mainstream acceptance, rather I'm a long time fan of the band, and have just lost interest since Mutter. I can't help myself though, I must say that them being on a record label that makes them label mates with Elton John and Nelly is... so depressing its nearly comical. That aside, Live Aus Berlin remains one of my favorite albums, and I could sit around and praise that release for hours. However, the fact is that Rammstein has gone downhill. Some may say that the slower, "more emotional" side of Rammstein shines through in "Reise, Reise," or claim that it is some sort of evolution of the band's talents. Rather, it is a degradation of everything the band used to produce. They used to have intensity, drive, and intelligent song-writing. Whether or not you're a fan of Rammstein, there is no denying that they wrote some quality music back in the day. With this release however, they have lost all the appeal they initially held. Be very wary of this album! If you're a fan of old Rammstein, you will be severely depresesed (much like myself) and you should just avoid listening to it, plain and simple. If you didn't like Rammstien before, but were attracted to the majority of the material on Mutter, this may be for you. Otherwise, I'm afraid I must say that this album is a disaster, plain and simple. Let's hope they come to their senses and release something better next time!
