REVIEW: Ravencult - Cosmic Chaos Self-financed, 2003
7/10
Ravencult - Cosmic Chaos - cover art This is the second demo from the Greek black metallers Ravencult. These four tracks will surely be enjoyed by most fans of furious and aggressive black metal if you don't mind some death and thrash metal influences thrown into the mix. The opening track of this demo, "Pure Hellish Blasphemy", sets the standard high right from the start and is one of the most intense black metal experiences I have had so far this year. Ravencult is a high quality band and they have already performed live in their home country together with bands like Ancient and Rotting Christ. There is a modern touch to this whole record which is further emphasized by the intro speech where agent Smith from the Matrix movie is speaking: "Human beings are a disease, a cancer of this planet... you are plague". They are correct in their observation but eradicating life for no good is unnecessary, whether it is human or not. There is a challenge in solving a problem, there is no challenge in removing the problem itself. Back to the music now. There is a very strong Slayer vibe running through this recording but Ravencult have of course also been influenced by the great forefathers of black metal such as Bathory, Emperor and Mayhem. It is dark, intense and pitch black. The vocalist is doing a very good job and they should definitely stick to him for future recordings. A little repetitive from time to time but this is definitely a band that you should keep track on if you're a fan of more riff-happy black metal without keyboards and female vocals. Stand-out tracks: "Pure Hellish Blasphemy", "Deathcult Supremacy".
