REVIEW: Reb Beach - Masquerade Frontiers Records, 2002
6/10
Reb Beach - Masquerade - cover art Reb Beach saw his career take off when he became one of the most sought after session working with artists like Eric Clapton, Bob Dylan, Roger Daltrey, Howard Jones and even errrm, theBee Gees. Reb then hooked up with bassist and frontman Kip Winger and the two of them formed the band Winger that released platinum records that featured six top fourty singles with music that was easy on the ear, but if you ask me of a very high quality. Sadly their music was not appreciated at all by Metallica and the producers of the infamous MTV cartoon series Bevis and Butthead and that is something that definitely did not help the popularity of the band increase. After Winger disbanded Reb returned to his hometown of Pittsburgh to perform on other artist's records and write material for his solo work under the tag "The Reb Beach Project" which showcased Reb virtuoso guitar style over a heavy fast blues rhythm section, with a sound that is reportedely reminiscent of Pat Travers and Robin Trower. However pretty soon he was invited to tour with his long time friend Alice Cooper and later on he joined the Dokken replacing George Lynch and recording the album "Erase The Slate". Reb then left Dokken in order to pursue his solo career and recorded his solo cd "Masquerade" with Tommy Bellin on Bass and Dave Throckmorton on drums and himself on vocals, guitar and keyboards. This album -trust me with this- doesn't really sound like you would believe that it could sound given the man's back track record. It is not at all an "easy" album to listen to. It is not too melodic neither it is poppy or anything like that. The sound is heavy, the mood is rather "heavy" as well and in some cases there is even a very grunge like feeling. I was quite surprised with the end result that is on offer here and I bet that anyone who is goint to listen to this album knowing Reb's background will be equally surprised. And yo, by the way Winger is back again with both Kip and Reb in the line up. I know that I was happy to hear that.
