REVIEW: Recourse - Weakening The Structure This Dark Reign Recordings, 2005
7.5/10
Recourse - Weakening The Structure - cover art Let this writer go out on a limb here for a minute or three. Recourse is the band and this is the 2005 re-release of their debut record from 2004, Weakening the Structure. Before any of the actual album is addressed, the band itself shall be. What are they? Well, according to vocalist Troy Norwood, they’re “too Hardcore to be Death Metal, and too Death Metal to be Hardcore!” That is certainly not incorrect but to only claim these two subgenres would be to deny the great Thrash Metal heritage that is prevalent throughout Recourse’s brand of sonic malfeasance and malevolence.

What Recourse plays is definitely not the most original thing to come down the proverbial pike in years but it is so well done that forgiveness is automatically granted for any lapse in originality. Production (and a guest vocal appearance on “Scorched Earth”) is ably handled by John Gallagher of Dying Fetus “fame” and most all is in order, particularly for what is essentially the debut full length by a relatively new band. Perhaps the best thing here is that the bass is very audible in that ‘90s Thrash manner and it kills.

Recourse have apparently been plying their trade since ’99 and with some help from their record label and extensive touring, I cannot see them not doing well for themselves. Imagine Pissing Razors being broad-sided by Lamb of God while Pro-Pain and Dying Fetus bear witness and you get a picture of what Recourse is capable of achieving. Theirs is a potent blend of Thrash, Hardcore, and Death Metal not unlike a slightly less intense Soilent Green. I like it. A lot. You should, too. Of note: The first track recalls early Sepultura (“Primitive Future” from the excellent Beneath the Remains). [The score suffered a bit due to brevity. I wanted more, dammit!]
