REVIEW: Red Wine - Sueños y Locura Arise Records, 2003
6.5/10
Red Wine - Sueños y Locura - cover art This is my first encounter with the Spanish band Red Wine, a band which has been active since 1997 and have released two previous albums. After having listened to the beautiful orchestral intro of their new album I was eager to listen to the rest of it. Unfortunately, but not really surprisingly, I had set my hopes too high. These guys are certainly good musicians and the vocalist is doing his job pretty well even though his voice sounds a little strained at times when he goes up high which is something he should stay away from, at least until he can do it for real. The song writing is not bad at all but there is still not much that sticks out from the rest as being really impressive. Good musicianship, decent song writing abilities and a good singer takes a band only this far. The thing I like best about this album is the orchestration. All lyrics are in the Spanish language which will probably have the negative result of alienating a large potential fanbase. This is sad because a band like this needs to gain as many new fans as possible. I don't think it's wrong to use your native language but the problem is that many listeners want to be able to understand the lyrics. Their label Arise Records apparently want to market Red Wine as a power / heavy metal band but in reality there is more to their music than that. There are some thrashier riffs but also progressive elements reminiscent of early Symphony X and guitar solos. Not a bad album at all but there is still something missing to hold the pieces together. Recommended to fans of keyboard driven melodic metal. Stand-out tracks: "Sueños y Locura", "Sombra De Poder", "Gigantes De Hierro".
