REVIEW: Reflect the Silence - Reflect the Silence self-released, 2008
3/10
Reflect the Silence - Reflect the Silence - cover art A pummeling and very well-produced din that unfortunately never rises above its zeitgeist aspirations, the self-titled first effort by Omaha, Nebraska’s Reflect the Silence is a melodicdeathmetalcornucopia that is perfectly acceptable within the confines of its genre but execrable from without. Listening to the six songs on offer, one is hard-pressed to find a single moment that isn’t a direct reference of American luminaries (do we really need the roll call at the moment?), themselves ersatz references to the Swedes who did it first and better and without the pandering nature of those goofy breakdowns. I hear the vigor, the rehearsing, the love for all things heavy, but I’ve heard it so many times before and I’m sick to death of the derivation, the half-hearted clean vocal refrains, the lack of nuance and class in the delivery. It’s a lamentable day when I view the likes of All That Remains as sympathetic heroes unduly put upon by these pallid imitators, but that day is here. Let the example of Reflect the Silence sound a clarion call to all young’uns, viz: Refrain from the copycatting and rethink why you formed a band at all, or else simply remove yourselves from contention.
