REVIEW: Reign of Terror - Inverted Beliefs Of The Sanguine God Dark Angel Records, 2002
7.5/10
Reign of Terror - Inverted Beliefs Of The Sanguine God - cover art This is a re-release of the 2000 album of the same name, though this one has three bonus tracks which are remastered / reworked versions of songs from 1998's "Traversing the Realms of Acheron." Incantation is clearly an influence on these madmen from El Paso, Texas, and I think that's a great thing. There are also flashes of Deicide (song #4 in particular) and Immolation and probably other ‘big name’ Death Metal bands throughout the album, but Incantation appears to be the band's main influence. This is brutal, Satanic Death Metal not quite at its finest, but it's pretty damn good. I find it hard to believe that this band is not on a more prominent label, being that they are so good. I might guess this is because Reign of Terror don't exactly play the most original thing to come down the pike in however long. Too bad, really. This review is brief because a song-by-song dissection is simply unnecessary. If you like the bands that I mentioned before, you will quite likely find yourself enjoying Reign of Terror. I will mention that this album is peppered with some soundbites on a few tracks. A scream opens the first song, an excerpt from a movie autopsy begins the fourth track, and the fifth track is ended with a comment on ritual orgies. Interested? As I alluded to in the Reign of Terror demo review, I think that when the band settles into a groove in the slower passages of some of their songs, it works extremely well. With about a minute left on track 6, this is very evident. Overall this is a solid recording with some very good songs. The three bonus, remastered / reworked tracks suffer a bit from overly clicky bass drum triggering but these songs are still quite competent. A final comment about the rest of the album is that the drum production is perhaps not at the right level. It sounds very much like everything is triggered, which is not unheard of in Death Metal, but this sound is a bit detrimental in my opinion.
