When looking at the cover of "Undoing creation" by Chicago-based death metallers Reprobation I honestly wondered what I was thinking about volunteering to write reviews for Tartarean Desire. First of all, the artwork doesn't really get me going, and when seeing a song titled "Cum covered coma patient"... Well, not my kind of title to say the least. Being slightly prejudice you can also see by looking at the cover that they most certainly are american, and american death metal often falls in the trap of crappy sound, where nothing really can be heard except for a vicious snare drum, and with vocals monotone beyong belief.
I was however totally wrong. In fact, after just a few seconds of listening I was sold on their concept. The sound is first of all really good, every instrument is clearly heard. Secondly, they have two vocalists. This a clever move, since the main vocalist (the growling one), who eventhough he has quite a personal and interesting voice, sounding like a death metal version of Dez Fafara in Coal Chamber (no, I am not a fan of CC) could be annoying in the long run, due to the lack of vocal variation and that you really can't hear a word of what he's grunting about. But it's still a cool voice, it actually makes me a bit giggly at times, and together with the other guys more shrieky vocals (which are good) it works great.
To the musical part then. The songs are far from boring, and do NOT sound the same, which one might expect. The tunes are actually great, shifting between slow and chunky to grindy in a way that definitely got me hooked right away. Playful and innovative (for being american death metal that is) without being over the top. The solos aren't that stimulating, but they are quickly over with anyways.
If that growly vocalist could learn to articulate a little and get some variation in that throat of his I'd be delighted, but still this is an excellent album, and I will definitely get their next one as well. If you're into chunky death metal, don't judge this album by its cover, buy it and you'll have an excellent piece of music making your day a whole lot better.
