Did you guys know that Martin Lopez and Martin Mendez from Opeth used to play in another band in their homeland, Uruguay, called REQUIEM AETERNAM? Well, now you know. The remaining members have kept playing and delivering the goods since their formation 10 years ago, and now, after their debut CD “Eternally Dying” which opened many doors for them such as being broadcasted in MTV Latino and MTV Brazil plus a huge response from the Latin American scene, they come out with “Philosopher”, their new opus, a seven song compendium of emotions and musical magic that followers of the above mentioned brothers and band will definitely love. Now you must be wondering the typical question: is this an Opeth copycat then? I can surely answer NO, it is not, and Requiem Aeternam is a band with its own personality, capable of standing out by their own talent instead of the shadow of Opeth members in their former line up. Amongst the many things to highlight in Philosopher, we have the participation of Ex-Immolation drummer Alex Hernandez and his exceptional creative contribution to the emotional and experimental sonic experience brought with Philosopher. As the name of the album suggests, it is a journey through the doctrines of different philosophers who had influenced the thoughts of millions in history including Nietzsche, Sun Tzu, Heraclitus, Rousseau and others, which to me, is an intellectual plus that fits perfectly into the musical atmosphere delivered by the band. Their music is mellow, intelligent, aggressive, nostalgic, sad, depressive and everything in between, ranging from fast and raw to complex, experimental and intertwined musical structures, in a nutshell, eclectic at its best, always fluctuating in a diversity of emotions and musical passages that any fan of well crafted music will love and admire. My suggestion, go get this CD and let it guide you through a wonderful journey through your inner self.
