On the west coast of Sweden a band called Revengia started to take form in the late 80s. In 1989 they recorded their first demo but soon after the guitarist Matti Almsenius moved to the USA to study for a year at the Musicians Institute in Los Angeles. After military service he returned to his home town Varberg and in 1993 Revengia was one of three bands from the town who qualified for the national championships in rock music. At the end of the year the band more or less disbanded and Matti spent his time working on other more known bands like The End and Eucharist but in 1997 he started missing the old Revengia songs. He was thinking about doing something with them but nothing happened until the year 2001. Since then the old songs have been recorded and now, more than ten years later, they are released under the title "A Decade In The Dark". Today the band is made up of Matti and his old Eucharist band mates, bassist Martin Karlsson and drummer Daniel Erlandsson (also in Arch Enemy). It is very hard to believe that these songs were written ten years ago because they sound very modern. They are perhaps slightly less dense and more straight-forward than what Eucharist did but they hold up well even today in my opinion. The melodic west coast touch is easy to spot but this is generally heavier and groovier and Matti's quasi-Lemmy vocals further accentuate a strong hard rock atmosphere which sets them apart from other similar bands from their area. I am not a big fan of Matti's raspy voice but he is luckily a decent singer. Revengia is not only for those with a big interest in the history of Swedish metal because the music is actually quite entertaining even today. Nothing that I think will amaze anyone but well done and worth a few minutes of your attention. Swedish melodic death / thrash metal meets 80s hard rock. Stand-out tracks: "Dying For An Answer".
