REVIEW: Reverend Bizarre - II: Crush The Insects Spikefarm Records, 2005
7.5/10
Reverend Bizarre - II: Crush The Insects - cover art Reverend Bizarre is a Finnish band whose music is not exactly bizarre but quite conventional Sabbathian doom metal. They have fought their way through their early stages since the band's formation in 1994 and it was not until 2002 that they released their debut album "In The Rectory Of The Bizarre Reverend". With their sophomore effort the trio shows no sign of musical experimentation or will to shatter their apocalyptical visions. They walk through marsh lands already explored in the past and Iommi would have no problem recognizing his original trademarked guitar work on this album. The production itself does not remind a great deal of Black Sabbath from the 70s but is rather muddy and more Cathedral like. The first three songs are all mid-tempo doom with quite catchy clean vocals from frontman Albert Magus but with the funeral dirge "Slave Of Satan" the tempo subsides and to be honest so does my attention. Funeral doom does possess a certain charm at times but there are very few bands who pull it off as well as necessary. Luckily Reverend Bizarre have not limited themselves to the side of their song writing that they do worst. "Crush The Insects" is a solid, coherent and well held together piece of doom metal that should cause at least a minor orgasm for most fans of old-school snail metal á la Black Sabbath and Cathedral. Simple, stripped down and to the point.
