When the first wave of power metal was spreading across
Europe I never thought much of it until I discovered that there were actually
a lot of very good bands out there that I had completely ignored. One of them
was the Italian Rhapsody who have blessed the world with their wonderful
symphonic brand of neoclassical power metal ever since their debut "Legendary
Tales" was released in 1997. Together with a few other bands like Therion,
Entombed, Nightwish, Black Sabbath and Cradle Of Filth they have created
something that is totally unique and unlike anything else that the world has
ever seen before. While the last year's "taster album" saw the composer
team of Turilli / Staropoli paying their tribute to movie music and classical
composers this new album shows Rhapsody experimenting with a somewhat rougher
edge while still keeping the Rhapsody trademarks with pompous choirs and
wonderful vocal lines. The problem this time is just that Fabio doesn't sound
very good when trying these more aggressive vocals and that kind of approach
doesn't really fit the band's music very good. Fans of the band should not
worry though since not much has changed. This time the main focus lies on the
vocals but it still sounds great. There is no song that sticks out clearly
from the rest though as we are used to see from their previous releases
(remember the final tracks from the two first releases?). The band might be in
need of some renewal but I still love
them.
