Rhetorica is a 6-member band from Romania. They begun in 1997 as a project made up by the members of two bands: Dirty Shirt and Legion. Since they had a successful response from the public, they determined to continue the project, which became with time a band in itself. This is their first release and they sing in their own language.
The title "Ganduri" (Thoughts) justifies absolutely their work because the compositions are complicated and well made. They have managed to release a nice artistic mini masterpiece, a small diamond.
I don't know what's going on with the Romanian Metal scene, but I bet Rhetorica should be the "Romanian Dream Theater". They embrace a wide range of influences from 60ties psychedelia and tuther until modern prog tendencies. However they are soaked in the progressive rock spirit of 70ties. It seems to have been influenced by many bands like Dream Theater, Pink Floyd (especially at "Liniste"), Emerson Lake & Palmer, Deep Purple and especially by Jon Lord at keyboards (for example Mi-e greu) and other progressive bands of the 70ties, without excluding other non prog influences. For example one could easily recognise Metallica's "Kthulu" theme ("Trist"), and Black Sabbath riffs ("Nu-mi spune").
They are a band with a wide variety, many changes of rhythm within the songs, sophisticated compositions ("Hei", "Trezire" are characteristic examples), dreamy and tripy pathways especially at the instrumental tracks ("Singur"). It is common some songs to end at a completely different pattern from the one they begin after having passed through many changes. The only drawback is that this becomes a bit boring sometimes ("Priveste"). Rhetorica don't play sophisticated in order just to demonstrate their indisputable music skills like many virtuosos guitar players. Their compositions are mature and aim not only in the mind but also in the heart of the listener. All band members are flawless musicians and if I would distinguish someone it would be unfair for the others. They deserve a worldwide recognition and the prog fans (and not only) should discover this small masterpiece.
