REVIEW: Rick Ray - A Summary Of The Works Of Rick Ray Neurosis Records, 2000
6/10
Rick Ray - A Summary Of The Works Of Rick Ray - cover art Rick Ray is a talented American musician who has been spitting out cd's for the last couple of years and this is a summary of his works so far. The songs on it are taken from eleven (!) different albums released between March 1999 and June 2000. It´s hard to classify this music but it is probably closer to progrock than any kind of metal. Most of the music is based on never-ending guitar licks á la Yngwie Malmsteen that gets tireing rather quickly. Rick Ray is doing most of the playing himself, taking care of guitars, bass, vocals, keyboards, guitar-synth, RXS and percussion all alone. Rick Schultz also appears on clarinet and Jack Ambrose on vocals. If you like Yngwie Malmsteen then this could be something for you. Rick Ray is probably a very talented musician but to me this album seems very plain with no song really sounding much different than the others. I find it hard to really like this album although it does have its finer moments. One or two guitar solos here and there can sound pretty good but hundreds of them sounding exactly the same for more than an hour is a little too much for me. Yngwie fans and guitar players give it a try but otherwise I advice you to stay away from it. Rick Ray´s albums can be purchased from Of Sound Mind at http://www.osmind.com/ or contact Neurosis Records at Hobbelshnimp@hotmail.com.
