Sweden brings on another one man band under the name of Rimthurs; this recent CD print of their second demo should introduce this band to the scene on a wider spectre. Once played this miniCD, the mid-tempo attack “Förbannelse” plays the role of the intro in a certain way, while the rest of tracks are offerings of mainly fast black metal with ornaments belonging to the cold lands of viking metal such as clean voice backgrounds. However, here we have aggressive music where the mellow/pompous ressonances are scarce. In the end, the balance of violence and melody is rather convincing. The most outstanding thing when hearing Rimthurs is in my opinion their fantastic bass lines (strangely enough performed by session musician Mordh), which distinguish this piece of music from the flock of black metal releases around there. The fast phrases unleashed by the four strings support perfectly the speed of the songs and they´re audible in a relevant level though the production could have been better. The bass guitar is not the only reason to appreciate this piece of music; the melodies created by guitars are also correct and far from boring. The reckless songs provide variety until the point the listening of “Ur:Kaos” leaves in me a positive “it´s too short” afterglow. The opus is closed with an off-shot homage to wacky “legends” Vondur. It sounds like early Ancient to my ears, at higher speed of course and portraying a monotonous pace and riffs throughout the song. Let´s wait for the Rimthurs full-length album to come since I reckon a great potential for this band if helped by a reasonable amount of time, budget and inspiration. Interesting.
