REVIEW: Ring, The - Tales From Midgard Scarlet Records, 2004
7.5/10
Ring, The - Tales From Midgard - cover art As if we haven't had enough of Tolkien this and that now that the trilogy has been finished you might as well have expected that a metal band called "The Ring" would eventually found its way to the cd shelves in the stores. With a suitable album title like "Tales From Midgard" I'm afraid a lot of people will only look at the cover and laugh without caring much about the music that is to be found underneath. You should not judge the book by its cover, something that I have come to see proof of many, many times. This band was put together by some of Sweden's most talented and respected hard rock musicians - multiinstrumentalists Jake Samuel, Pontus Norgren and Marcus Jidell. They have a track record that includes bands such as Totem, Grand Slam, Talisman, Treasure Land and Great King Rat. Former Rainbow and Yngwie Malmsteen vocalist Dougie White even guests on the track "Voices of The Fallen Kings" and he does it well. Sometimes the songs tend to get a little bit too basic but much thanks to the individual skills of the band members this becomes a highly enjoyable album that should please all Tolkien fans of course but also those of you who know how to appreciate quality hard rock and epic power metal. Stand-out tracks: "Voices Of The Fallen Kings", "Unite Or Fall".
