This band is a classic! Ripping Corpse is a very good death metal band whose most known trait is the presence of Erik Rutan in the guitar, famous since his later work with masters Morbid Angel, and for his own devastating death metal outfit Hate Eternal. In their short life as a band, they only recorded this LP, but despite of that, this act really deserves serious recognition, and many bands have claimed Ripping Corpse have been a great influence on their music. “Dreaming with the dead” was recorded in1991, so it was a major impact in the scene then, and meant a gust of fresh air in the face of metal. Short, intense songs, powerful and frenzied, with a competent sound and a huge dose of technical skills (mainly on guitars) without being too twisted ŕ la Cynic or Morbid Angel, make this album a must. The vocals are the typical thrashy type (in the vein of Chuck Schuldiner), while the music could be described as thrash metal with an important portion of death metal elements. Even grindcore is showed more or less through some glimpses, at times in the lyrical side, other times directly in the music, with some well-conceived blastbeats here and there. In some moments the music resembles pure death metal, but guitars aren´t as distorted nor down-tuned as they are in the “pure” death albums. The result is really curious, it´s like they had discovered a new style but they play it the old 80´s thrash way, or something like that. Overall, I think this album is really enjoyable for any thrash or death metal fan, and I consider it as a very important LP to know the evolution of extreme music in history.
