Today we have a very varied landscape of metal, where different styles are mixed together to create something new, like opera-metal, folk or mediaval influenced metal.
Now the Swedish band Rise And Shine adds a new mixture and a very interesting and effective one:
The spirit of the hippies meets doom meets metal/hardrock. And this is really no advertising saying, Rise and shine managed to catch the spirit of a Janis Joplin and her times and combined it with doomy parts and metal. I know, this might sound like a mosaic of copied influences. But no. Surely you can feel and hear from which musicians Rise and Shine are inspired, but this is no copycat and the songs breath the own individuality of this swedish band. Additionally all fits very well together, the different styles are not simply mixed together, they are interweaved together, creating a new spirit and metal atmosphere. Regarding the music as a whole, two points are very important: The songwritings and song structures that makes the songs not only varied, but also create an emotional tour de force between doomy atmosphere, head banging causing metal guitar riffs and the revolting spirit of Janes Joplin.
And the second point is surely the female vocalist Josabeth Leidi who is just kicking your ass from the moment she starts to sing until she ends. Her voice is very powerful, with interesting shades of metal styles.
In my opinion she is as a metal woman nearly on the same level like Ronnie James Dio. And even with the first track she proves her abilities.
The emotions and atmosphere on "Ghosts of the past" are like a mixture of Woodstock, an international Harley Davidson meeting and a doom festival.
Among the standout tracks: Winterday, Ghosts of the Past and Untitled.
