REVIEW: Rising - Rising self-released, 2009
7.5/10
Rising - Rising - cover art All four tracks on this enterprising debut move more or less at the same rumbling clip and even hover at or around the four-minute mark. Atop the basic chassis, however, you’ve got heaps of variation, as this threesome from Denmark ply stoner rock, sludge and psychedelia. Reminds me of Corrosion of Conformity circa Blind driving around with Neurosis strapped to its hood like the hapless fellows in QOTSA’s “No One Knows” video. And throw in some debut-album Queens while you’re at it, too. Guitar riffs are nearly outclassed by the thunderous rhythm section but still make themselves felt with any number of slick lick tricks. The digipak artwork and layout are boss, and the recording was shipped off and mastered by Alan Douches (if you don’t know who he is, you’re even bigger douches than him), so you know these guys showed up to compete. It sounds intimate, it sounds epic, the whole thing resonates and I would not be surprised if I woke up in some not-too-distant future to discover these assbags the buzz band on the minds and tongues of a knowing cadre. Or opening for Mastodon, at the very least.
