REVIEW: Rising Moon - They Are As Us Crash Music Inc., 2005
7.5/10
Rising Moon - They Are As Us - cover art It's a shame that the cover art of this album looks as awful and devoid of taste as it does because the music on the actual disc is definitely not reflected by this look. Italy's Rising Moon will not revolutionize the metal genre but they are one of the few melodic death metal bands today who still manage to pull out something interesting out of the Swedish sound. Baptizing one of your songs to "Swedish Metal" kind of says it all. Their worship for the genre created and led by names like At The Gates, Dark Tranquillity, Eucharist and In Flames is very strong and they obviously do not try to hide their influences. Honesty is something I appreciate and unlike certain bands who claim that they sound like no other band today and only write what sounds good to them without any outside influences, Rising Moon leave the book open. No hypocrisy even though they do sound a lot like Hypocrisy at times.

"They Are As Us" is a very groovy, catchy, melodic and aggressive album that will no doubt appeal to most fans of melodic death metal. The production is powerful and the only thing I have to complain about is that the vocals are buried far too deep in the mix most of the time. Offering the vocals a more prominent position would have added another punch to the entire sound which would have benefitted the band. Something to think about the next time because this is certainly and hopefully not the last we hear from the Italian band. While Rising Moon are not quite ready to compete with the few leading leading Swedish bands who are still around they are not far behind. Nothing innovative or breathtaking but quality stuff.
