REVIEW: Ritual Carnage - The Birth Of Tragedy Osmose Productions, 2002
7.5/10
Ritual Carnage - The Birth Of Tragedy - cover art Ritual Carnage is the brainchild of Danny Montgomery who is now a veteran on the extreme metal scene. Influenced by British giants like Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden and Judas Priest, he began playing guitar in 1983 in the band Pagan Faith from Tampa, Florida. Since then he has been moving back and forth between Florida and Japan where he now once again resides since 1993. That was also when he formed his new band Ritual Carnage together with some Japanese friends. On this album the influences from the early British metal scene can't be heard that clearly. Instead the music is mostly straight-forward Bay Area thrash which is nice to hear. There are plenty of exciting riffs that make you think of Exodus, Death Angel, Heathen and all the others while listening to this album. Ritual Carnage is a little bit more brutal and technical than some of these bands though with a touch of the sound from the Florida death metal scene. Montgomery also has a very strong characteristic voice that fit in very well with this type of music. He actually sounds like a mix of a thrash metal vocalist and Iced Earth's Matthew Barlow. For those of you who enjoy speed, technicality, melody, power and brutality this is a very nice release from one of the best Japanese metal bands of the 90's.
