Wow, you will definitely hit the brown note if you crank this sucker too loudly, but that's a compliment. Boasting mixing and mastering by none other than The Reverend Steve Austin of Today is the Day fame (okay, he's probably most famous for producing Lamb of God's debut record but I knew of him first via TitD, and yes, I digress...), Roanoke brings the storm all the way from Portland, Oregon -- not Virginia -- and they absolutely CRUSH in doing so! If The Electric Wizard is too pop for you, Warhorse too clean, and Sunn O))) too mainstream, you owe it to yourself to check out this underground behemoth. Nods to Grief and Eyehategod are present, too, though much slooower and looower. On this limited EP release, Roanoke offer one track of feedback-soaked, monolithic riffage accompanied by guttural bellows, voluminous bass rumblings, and ponderously pounding percussion that works to utter perfection. Well, if this is your thing, anyway. Massive Doom like this is clearly not for everyone but if you're already in the church of the truly sick and demented, you will worship at the altar of Roanoke. The band loses points for brevity, even if the singular song is almost 32 minutes long, but I'm bein' a bastard that way simply because I want more. My opening remark says it all. Consider the storm brought.
