REVIEW: Rossomahaar - Quaerite Lux In Tenebris (Exploring The External Worlds) Xtreem Music, 2003
6.5/10
Rossomahaar - Quaerite Lux In Tenebris (Exploring The External Worlds) - cover art Seven years into their career, the Russian black metal veterans Rossomahaar manage to secure a deal with a Western record label in order to gather new fans all over the world. The label is none other than Xtreem Music, the new label founded by former Repulse Records owner Dave Rotten. The second album from the Moscow based band consist of fast and furious black metal but it is still both melodic and dynamic. On top of churning guitars and explosive drumming the music is further sharpened with keyboards which are used without excess in order to accentuate themselves from bands who use the keyboard as the lead instrument. Instead Rossomahaar let the guitars lead the songs with the demonic vocals from Lazar accompanying keyboard enhanced melodies and dynamic song structures in a very nice way. Even though this album is highly enjoyable it is a little bit too chaotic and unstructured to fully reach its potential. The music is clearly rooted in the black metal scene but there is also quite a lot of heavy metal riffing which sometimes feel a little out of place. Nonetheless, Rossomahaar is one of the most interesting bands evolving from Russia. Personally I like bands like Rakoth and Satarial better I must admit.
