REVIEW: Rotting Christ - Genesis Century Media, 2002
8.5/10
Rotting Christ - Genesis - cover art Rotting Christ is a band that needs no introduction. They are without a doubt the most well known metal band ever to leave the Greek isles (they are not from the isles but still...) for an international career and they are of course also one of the most important extreme metal bands in the world. Having been active for close to fifteen years these guys certainly have lots of experience and master the fine art of extreme music very well to say the least. In their early days they were inspired by bands like Venom, Bathory and Possessed but during the years they have evolved into something that sounds like no other band. Their new album "Genesis" does not have too much in common with the aforementioned pioneers except for the dark brooding atmosphere that shines through these ten tracks. It wouldn't really be correct to call the music of Rotting Christ today death metal or black metal because they are a band that crosses the constructed labels back and forth with wonderful ease. Rotting Christ have changed a lot during their long career - from the raw black metal of their early days to the more gothic sounding "Sleep Of The Angels". This album shows both sides of the band. We get to hear both heavy aggressive songs but also tracks built more on intricate melodies and dark atmospheres. Rotting Christ are also lucky enough to have one of the best extreme metal vocalists in the world in the form of Sakis. On this album they do however alternate between growling, screams, whispers and dark clean vocals and the clean ones are sometimes a little annoying while at other times they sound great. This album is a nice mix of atmospheric death metal and industrial black metal and definitely some of the finest music Rotting Christ have ever produced. "Khronos" was a little bit of a disappointment but "Genesis" kicks the Greeks right back into the elite team once again. 2002 has so far been a great year for extreme metal and I hope this trend continues. Stand-out tracks: "Lex Talionis", "Quintessence", "Under The Name Of Legion".
