REVIEW: Rotting Christ - Khronos Century Media, 2000
8.5/10
Rotting Christ - Khronos - cover art After a couple of albums of more mellow, melodic and melancholic gothic influenced albums, the most prominent of Greek metal bands entered the Abyss studios with sound wizard Peter Tägtgren to create something darker and more extreme. The result was "Khronos", an album where Rotting Christ returns to their roots. The sound of this album is once again harsher and more aggressive which will certainly appeal to the fans who liked what they did in their early days before they signed with Century Media. The gothic touch is still apparent even on this album though and Rotting Christ of today actually reminds me of the Belgian black metal band Ancient Rites. While Ancient Rites perform what I would like to call gothic black metal, Rotting Christ show more death metal influences. Albeit the vocals are mainly growls they sound very clear in some strange way. On "Khronos" they let the guitars speak out loud once again and the keyboards have been pushed away to do their subtle work in the background most of the time. As always the music is very melodic and after more than ten years of hard work Rotting Christ today stand in the forefront of the extreme metal scene. For "Khronos" the band also did a cover version of the Current 93 song "Lucifer Over London" from back in 1994 which is one of many highlights of a wonderful album. Overall this is a very coherent release with many similar sounding songs but what is important to emphasize is that it never gets boring. There are subtle melodies, nice vocal lines and a thick Abyss sound wall in every song that should make sure that every fan of melodic death / gothic / black metal will enjoy this album. Greece is a country with a strong metal scene and Rotting Christ have certainly been inspiring lots of younger bands to come out of the country. The only thing I don't like about the album is that there are a couple of minutes of silence in the last song before some kind of outro music kicks in. Things like that really annoys me. Stand-out tracks: "Thou Art Blind", "Aeternatus", "Lucifer Over London", "You Are I".
