REVIEW: Rotting Christ - Theogonia Season Of Mist, 2007
8/10
Rotting Christ - Theogonia - cover art While we had to wait for the new album for quite some time (3 years since the ‘Sanctus Diavolos’ album), Rotting Christ delivers another great album- those that had grown rather impatient (such as myself, personally) don’t have to worry about the outcome. I say this because most bands that ‘supposedly’ go back to their old, more aggressive sound, turn out to be exaggerating (read: lying) and deliver something that the old nor the new fans hardly appreciate. Instead, ‘Theogonia’ is one solid release! Notably at first, George Bokos, the new gitarist, doesn’t perform on this album, all the guitars are performed by Sakis himself. The style doesn’t really remind one of the albums ‘Thy mighty contract’ or ‘Non Serviam’, on a personal level, instead, it reminds me more of a perfect mix between the albums ‘Genesis’, ‘Triarchy of the lost lovers’ and ‘Sanctus Diavolos’, but with ‘that’ more spice, giving a small nod towards the old days. Keyboards create the well-known (and loved) typical Rotting Christ atmosphere, backed up by lots of various melodies from the guitar(s) and choir arrangements that have been handled by none other than Christos Antoniou (of Septic Flesh and Chaostar fame). Yes, it’s obvious that Rotting Christ like their new home (Season of Mist label) and more importantly fit right in, this was a good step to take. ‘Theogonia’, furthermore, was produced, mastered and partially mixed by Sakis (together with Aris Christou) and is all by all a good album that fortunately allows Rotting Christ to keep travelling along the way as they have been for 20 years. The limited edition (in digipak format..) is an even greater experience, including a bonus DVD that features video material from the ‘Sanctus Diavolos’ tour and the ‘Making of.. Theogonia’. I hope that we won’t have to wait too long for the next album, but ‘Theogonia’ will more than likely keep the fans satisfied until that time. 20 years and this new album... it’s definitely something to celebrate!
