REVIEW: Runemagick - Requiem Of The Apocalypse Aftermath Music, 2002
7/10
Runemagick - Requiem Of The Apocalypse - cover art Gothenburg, Sweden, is not all about melodic death metal as some of you may be aware of. Runemagick is one of the bands who have dared to defy the trend and focus on the darker side of death metal. The band was formed in 1990 but today only Nicklas "Terror" Rudolfsson remains from the original lineup. Today the band also features Fredrik Johnsson on guitars, Daniel Moilanen on drums and the female bass player Emma Karlsson. This is dark death metal more in the Dissection vein and earlier on a couple of Dissection members also played in Runemagick. The music is of course not without melody but the vocals are more brutal and the music is darker than what we are used to hear from most Swedish bands today. Dissection was one of the most successful Swedish extreme metal bands ever but today there are very few bands who continue this tradition the way Runemagick do. The kind of death metal that Runemagick is playing is mid-paced and kind of doomy but sometimes some Slayer-like riffs can be heard as well. Last year the band parted ways with their former label Century Media but luckily the Norwegian label Aftermath Music realized the potential that lies within the band and I'm glad to see that this kind of music is still supported by at least some people. I admit that there is nothing new or groundbreaking with this release but it is a very good and varied doom / death metal release with strong riffs, a lot of atmosphere and solid deep growling.
