This tribute to the barbarian Poledouris starts off with “The Arrival of the Troops”, a short keyboard-based symphonic piece. Next up is “Playing with Gods”, a rather “playful” piece indeed (excuse the pun)! The Celtic-sounding fragments and harp bits are never dull. There is also a fair share of strength and dexterity-building exercise style guitar solos, some flutes, keys, and a monster / giant speaking voice done with the brilliant voice-changer. Sounds like a lot of stuff to handle but it isn’t quite as busy as it sounds. A downside if you want to call it that is the shrieking vocals. It’s just that in many Mediterranean and Latin dialects (Spanish particularly), the people seem to speak with their mouths wide-open, which gives it a trashy feel. Overall this album is very energetic and guitar-driven. A brief skim through the lyrics conjure an image of the movie “Gladiator” in my head (words like horse, prey, battlefield, cowards, sons, and steel). And there is quite a mighty riff on “The Search” to complement this image. In conclusion the music is not bad at all, though it would help to organize things a little and there is definitely room to fine-tune those vocals. It’s hard for me to take them seriously.
