“Blazon stone” was not convincing at all, at least in my opinion. Except for some loose songs, the overall result was just another album in the Running Wild collection, one more typical heavy metal album. However, “Pile of skulls” stood out in a more significant manner. No filling cheap songs to justify sixty minutes of album, each song in this LP was strong and consistent. This time the intro is far better than in the previous album, and possibly the best Running Wild intro ever. I don´t know if you will know the “Captain Harlock” TV series, an old Japanese production dating from 1979 or something. Well, the fact is that “Chamber Of Lies” has a melody very similar to the main musical theme from those series! Really weird thing! But taking into account that “Captain Harlock” was about a space pirate, and Running Wild are possibly the most next of kin to Störtebecker and other sea bawds, it could be a homage rather than a coincidence! Curiosities apart, “Pile of skulls” is one of the best Runnig Wild albums for me. The first notes of the fast “Whirlwind” are a nice sign that we´re going to enjoy this one... choruses are powerful and strong, catchy and great. This way, astonishing songs as killer “Lead Or Gold”, “Jennings Revenge” or “Black Wings Of Death” flow with no remorse. Epic, 11 minutes long, pirate song “Treasure Island” originally closed the album, but the US version I own included a bonus track, the re-recorded “Beggars Night” (originally featured in the “Under Jolly Roger” album). The sound of the album is good, although a bit low in general and the drums are too loud. True heavy metal, that´s all. No more words are needed; just music!
