REVIEW: Running Wild - The First Years Of Piracy Noise Records, 1991
7/10
Running Wild - The First Years Of Piracy - cover art This CD is nothing but a “best of” consisting of songs taken from the period ranging from the first album to “Under Jolly Roger”. The additional lure, especially for die hard fans, is that those songs were re-recorded by the current line-up (the band circa 1991 was Rolf on guitar/vocals, Axel Morgen guitar, Jens Becker on the four strings and AC –later on Lacrimosa- hitting drums). As a result, the sound is much stronger than in the original mixes; a more experienced band like the one playing in this recording was able to perform the songs faster, louder and better than in the old LPs. Anyway, this is still a compilation of favourites, and as that, one must judge the album taking into account this circumstance. It means that we aren´t going to find here nothing new, except for the fact that “Walpurgis Night”, a rare song only released before in the “Victim Of States Power” maxi-single in 1984, has been included in the album´s song list. Apart from that, the only addition is the re-recording itself, nothing more, nothing less. One can´t say this album sounds bad, but one thing is sure: the snare drum is too loud! It´s quite easy to suffer a headache after listening to this album because of the unbalanced drum sound. I don´t know if you will understand me when I say some albums have an apparently correct sound, when everything can be heard, but make you feel tired after the listen. Looks like the adjusting of the mix isn´t the proper one. Apart from the sound, this is just what it appears to be: a simple re-recording of hits from a very good, uncompromising heavy metal band.
