Rutthna emerged as a one-man project from Thyrfing drummer Joakim Kristensson in 2002. He recorded a demo entitled "Decomposing Eve" on his own before recruiting Raise Hell drummer Dennis Ekdahl to bash the skins. Now a deal has been signed with the Swedish label Black Lodge for the release of their debut album "Doomsdaylight" which is comprised of two songs from the previous demo ("The Fifth Angel" and "Evolution's End") as well as five younger compositions. The suitably titled debut is mainly built around repetitive, gloomy riffs in a slightly doomy pace, more primitive and old-school than what his main act offer us. Rutthna pays tribute to the black past and Darkthrone immediately comes by as a reference point of importance although this is more melodic. Fans of Khold who don't mind a less refined and rougher production should be attracted by "Doomsdaylight". The song writing is simple and straight-forward but efficient and especially the three opening songs easily stick to your mind. The second part of the track list has less of interest to offer the listener and falls short of stirring up any particular emotions in me. Joakim is not a stellar black metal vocalist and although it's far from disastrous his performance in that department is not what you remember the most from this recording. The sonic landscape is bleak and dark, just the way a black metal cd is supposed to be.
