REVIEW: SWWAATS - The Grand Partition and the Abrogation of Idolatry Nuclear Blast, 2009
8/10
SWWAATS - The Grand Partition and the Abrogation of Idolatry - cover art Brutal grinding death metal bands have been flooding the metal scene for quite a while, and although there is a great amount of musical capabilities and endurance present in the genre, let’s be honest, there is huge a lack of originality and an excessive number of copycats out there. But once in a while you get the occasional band that manages to add a little something or other to the equation, push some boundaries and come up with something that will make them noticeable.

Tampa, Florida based SWWAATS (which stands for Success Will Write Apocalypse Across The Sky) might be one of those bands that will get the attention of the grind and death metal scenes with their debut album The Grand Partition and the Abrogation of Idolatry, not only for their apparent taste for long ass names but for their clear ability to create brutal and dynamic death metal. The album, produced by renowned music / producer James Murphy is a maniacal, pounding, unmerciful and pissed off compendium of 13 songs which although it is not the most original brutal death metal album out there, it is worth having in the collection of fans of the genre.

By looking at the amazing cover artwork, the titles of some of the songs as well as some of the information about the band, they also seem to pay special attention not only to the music but to the lyrical content and overall concept behind their music and that is a great complement for a total quality package.

The musical influences felt along the 13 tracks are quite varied, which makes it an interesting listening in which it is very appealing to feel the classic Tampa death metal style combined with death metal elements characteristic of other scenes. The songs feel carefully structured, you can sense their intentions to stay away from repetition and monotony, and the musical talent and abilities of the members of the band is unquestionable.

In a nutshell this a very dynamic, well produced and relentless production which I am sure fans of Suffocation, Skinless, Man Must Die, Dying Fetus and good death metal in general will receive SWAATS with open arms.
