REVIEW: Sacred Steel - Iron Blessings Massacre Records, 2004
7.5/10
Sacred Steel - Iron Blessings - cover art Sacred Steel has one of those vocalists you either love or hate. Gerrit P. Metz does not only have a very characteristic voice, he also sings an unconventional manner. I did not enjoy Sacred Steel that much in the past but their latest and 5th studio album "Iron Blessings" has some charming moments. This is a band who has not followed the same path as many of their countrymen, playing traditional German power metal in the Helloween school. Instead they have adopted a heavier and rougher edged sound more similar to American power / heavy metal bands like Destiny's End but Sacred Steel even has some growling vocals which, believe it or not, fit in very well with the overall massive sound. There is a little bit of a Manowar warning here but if you like the good old stereotypical "true" metal lyrics then give these guys a chance. "Iron Blessings" is the most diverse, intense and stimulating album the band has produced so far. Excellent musicianship, decent songwriting and a perfect example that German heavy / power metal does not have to sound like Helloween. Sacred Steel have carved their own musical sculpture and although Gerrit's vocals sometimes gets a little bit too much for me, I enjoyed this album and will certainly catch the band live if I ever get the chance. James Rivera fans should definitely check this out.
