Salem is for sure one of the longest running bands of the
small but very interesting metal scene in Israel, the holiest of countries.
Having formed in 1985 they are not only veterans of Israel but also in the
world as a whole. After a couple of demos and several albums released on
Morbid Records of Germany and the Israeli label B.N.E. they have now signed a
three album deal with Germany's new and very interesting label System Shock.
Salem perform black metal with lots of dynamic and violent riffing, furious
and anguished screams but also a good deal of melodies. Even though I would
think black metal is the most suited label for their music there are also
plenty of death metal influences, especially when it comes to drums and guitar
riffs. Just like the younger bands Orphaned Land and Melechesh, Salem uses
unusual song structures that can be traced back to the Mediterranean
traditional music. In fact, Salem actually sounds a little like a more
aggressive and raw version of Melechesh although they don't take it quite as
far as their countrymen. The clean female vocals from Kristin E. Wallace are
wonderful and the anguished screams of Zeev Tananboim are very efficient as
well in creating a very dark and sinister atmosphere. Even though the oriental
influences are not always that obvious in their music they use both Afro-Cuban
percussion and an Arabic percussion instrument called darbuka in several
songs. Salem is definitely one of the most interesting bands from Israel. If
you like melodic, melancholic and aggressive black metal with lots of riffing
than this is for you. Stand-out tracks: "Coming End Of Reason", "Feed On
Your Grief".
