REVIEW: Samael - Eternal Century Media, 1999
8/10
Samael - Eternal - cover art Another nice release from the brothers Xy and Vorph of Samael. "Eternal" is a continuation from the "Exodus" MCD that Samael released in 1998 and the sound is very much the same - heavy guitars with lots of keyboard added. Sometimes they manage to do this in a very nice way but unfortunately there is a little bit too much keyboard at some places that make the music sound noisy and unclear. If you compare the vocals to those on "Exodus" there are now more spoken voices and less growling. Perhaps this has something to do with Samael transforming from an originally rather satanic band to one more focused on general astral spirituality and questions about life itself. As a whole this is a rather complex Samael album - influenced by death metal, techno, rock music and also classical music - and mostly it sounds pretty nice although it's not one of my favourite albums. The album was recorded at Montain Studio, recorded, engineered and mixed by David Richards and Kris Fredriksson.
