REVIEW: San Dimas - San Dimas Massacre Records, 2004
5.5/10
San Dimas - San Dimas - cover art A little background: San Dimas was founded in Switzerland 1993, but under the name Mud Slick. They have released four CD’s (making this the fifth) which all have gone well. The band has toured with big names such as Billy Idol and Bon Jovi. Nowadays there are only two members remaining from the first constellation. The Music: San Dimas play modern rock the very American way. Sounding like Nickelback or a Machine Head - Creed / Train clone. It is far from innovating, all of the usual ingredients are there: the anxiousness in the vocals, the pain. You have the slow riffing screeching guitars and the almost funky bass, groovy drums and so on. But this kind of music does almost always sound good so I really don’t mind the lack of something new. Depression, confinement, turbidity. This record holds many of those black feelings creeping inside us. While listening to San Dimas I felt them much clearer giving two different things to think about the music: it’s good because it creates / opens my feelings, or it’s bad because it make me more grieved… Any of the songs could have been the lead song for an American TV show and the intro to the song “Fade Away” actually has a bit of the arrangement that the Swedish program Musikbyrån (The music bureau) uses. Oops. The singer has a suitable voice for this music, but it’s a little weak when the music gets tougher. It is more (hard)rock than metal but more Slipknot than Black Sabbath.
