Sargatanas is a brutal blackened death
metal band that was formed way back in 1986 in Monterrey, Mexico. This advance
promo that I have been given contains four out of nine tracks from their new
cd "Knights Of The Southern Cross" which is soon to be released on the
German label Barbarian Wrath. Also included are five songs from their first
full-length album "The Enlightenment" which was released in 1999 on
Conquistador Records. Sargatanas have learned a lot since they formed over ten
years ago and there is no doubt that these guys are skilled musicians. Even
though they are a seemingly satanic band they don't play that fast as most
bands tend to do. Instead they rely more on heavy rhythm patterns and some
pretty interesting and unconventional vocals that alternates from black to
death and back again. There are some faster sections in their music as well so
speed freaks should not worry. Sometimes, although not too often, the band
fall into monotony but the biggest problem with these tracks is the lacking
sound quality. Mexico is a country where black metal is very popular these
days and if you want to explore some of the native extreme acts maybe
Sargatanas would be a good band to start out with. The older tracks are pretty
uninspiring basic death metal á la Morbid Angel but the newer material sounds
more diverse and interesting.
