REVIEW: Sargatanas Reign - Bloodwork - Techniques Of Torture Regain Records, 2005
8/10
Sargatanas Reign - Bloodwork - Techniques Of Torture - cover art The debut full-length from Swedish death metallers Sargatanas Reign, "Euthanasia...Last Resort" (2002), was a rather chaotic and underproduced album in my opinion, albeit showing promise for a brighter future. Now they have indeed moved forward. A new deal has been struck with leading Swedish metal merchants Regain Records, a new frontman has been found in Jonas Matsson (Nominon) and the production is miles ahead of that of their previous effort. As if this wasn't enough the band has worked hard on making the song writing sound more coherent and not overpowering the band members' instrumental skills. The technical elements of their music has not been sacrificed at all but have become more assimilated with the whole audial picture. Sargatanas Reign may be a Swedish band but their music is very atypical, more closely related to the technical side of old-school American death metal and the modern Polish scene. "Bloodwork" contains the best material by far from the band and Sweden could really use a quality death metal band who does not worship At The Gates and / or In Flames. This is a more than welcome addition to the Swedish death metal scene and they do no doubt have the potential to compete on an international level as well. Just listen to the Morbid Angel drenched "Chaos Theory" or "Blindfolded" and you will know what I'm talking about. A brutal, technical and well composed piece of death metal.
