The Denver, Colorado based band Satan's Host is mostly known for having featured the Jag Panzer frontman Harry Conklin on vocals, here aptly bearing the alias "Leviathan Thisiren". The band was born in the late 70s and they released a hard to find album called "Metal From Hell" for a small label named Web Records in 1986. They then went down under for many years until original member and guitarist "Patrick Evil" resurrected the band, now in a completely different shape. While "Metal From Hell" had been a traditional US power metal album, albeit with a dark edge, their new album "Burning The Born Again..." has lost all references to power metal whatsoever. Instead they have opted for a sound that might suit their lyrical image better. The overall sound of this recording reminds me a lot of the Morbid Angel releases and musically there are some noticable similarities also. Satan's Host anno 2004 does not stop at being a Morbid Angel clone though but incorporate influences from many different genres, wearing a black coat but also adding a few At The Gates riffs and one or two solos.
The guitars and raw vocals work well together but the drum playing is rather stiff and uninteresting in my opinion. Otherwise the production is very good and even though Satan's Host will avert the eyes of many old fans they will certainly appeal to a whole new crowd. "Burning The Born Again..." is a mid-paced album that lands at the point where doom, black and death metal meet. The song structures are simple and straight-forward but they work and fans of old-school 80s metal in general should have fun while listening to the album. Satan's Host are kind enough to offer 73 minutes of music to the metalheads which is almost enough for two full-length albums. In other words this is definitely a value for money release. A nice return for the Colorado veterans who should receive a warm welcome in the metal underground.
