Satarial is one of the oldest metal bands from
Russian and formed as early as 1989. Back then they were known under the name
A.M.S.G. (Ad Maiorum Satan Glorium). It was in 1993, when the current female
keyboard player Angel Bust joined the band, that they became Satarial. Taking
on a heathen-ish and anti-Christian image they were sure to raise some
attention in the Russian society and their debut album "The Queen Of The
Elves' Land" was delayed for one year since the Russian Orthodox Church
(blessed be...) did their best to prevent its release. Apparently they did
luckily not do enough because the album was finally released in 1998 and now
it's time for the long awaited follow-up entitled "Heidenlarm". Since then
they have had a few line-up changes. Both the violin and flute player have
been replaced but the instruments are fortunately still there and stronger
than ever before. The musical roots of Satarial lie in black metal and Russian
traditional music. It is not that unusual these days to mix black metal with
folk music but I have still never heard any other band who sounds like
Satarial. They manage to create a unique atmosphere with theatrical music,
flutes, violin and, most important of all, the amazing vocals from the female
session member Juice. She has a perfect voice for this kind of music. She is
also a very talented folk singer as it seems. In my opinion Satarial have
never been better than they are now and they are definitely one of the leading
Russian bands together with Rakoth. A must-have for anyone into pagan black
metal. Stand-out tracks: "In The Flame Of Sabbath", "Satarial", "The Cup
Of Heady Pain".
