"Hydra", the third album from Swedish melodic black metallers Satariel, was recorded in late March last year for the Greek label Black Lotus Records but for some reason the unholy union did not satisfy the band and they have now moved on to Cold / Regain Records. Satariel is not the most productive band on this Earth but as long as they prioritize quality over quantity there is no real reason to complain about their somewhat slow progress. "Hydra" opens with a dreamy and melodic mid-paced black metal hymn called "The Freedom Call" which is followed by two songs where elements of melodic death / thrash metal are easy to spot and play important roles in the forward drive of each song. The production team of Daniel Bergstrand, Örjan Örnkloo and the band's guitarist / keyboard player Magnus Alakangas, have settled with a very clean and crisp sound which suits the music pretty nice. It is near impossible not to be impressive by the wide register that front man Pär Johansson possesses, shifting with ease between moody clean vocals and sharp black quasi-growls. It wouldn't be fair to refer to Satariel as black metal today as a large part of the metal spectrum is represented on "Hydra", a melodic and laid-back extreme metal album with black vocals. Quality over quantity is a concept that works, at least in this particular case. Stand-out tracks: "Be You Angel, Be You Beast", "Claw The Clouds", "The Springrise".
